Ms. Perry's Book Club

I chose this book because it is a Newbery Honor novel, and written by the New York Times best selling author Rita Williams-Garcia, who’s an African American woman. This novel won the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction and the Coretta Scott King Award and was a National Book Award Finalist. This book has an interesting storyline and will teach older elementary girls a about things that have happened in the past.

In the summer of 1968, after travelling from Brooklyn to Oakland, California, to spend a month with the mother they barely know, eleven-year-old Delphine and her two younger sisters arrive to a cold welcome as they discover that their mother, a dedicated poet and printer, is resentful of the intrusion of their visit and wants them to attend a nearby Black Panther summer camp.

Why focus on sight words?

When children learn to read in school, we teach them to sound out words and blend them together. Reading is an essential skill that can be difficult. It can be difficult because there are many different rules to the English language. For example, with the word /the/, the /e/ doesn’t make its taught short or long sound. With the word /where/, it doesn’t follow the phonics rule we teach about silent /e/ telling the other vowel to be long.

Sight words are commonly used words that appear in spoken and written language. Sight words appear in most beginner leveled books. Sight words are important because it builds more fluent and confident readers. When children know their sight words, they don’t have to stop as often to blend words together.

Knowledge of letter names and sounds is a strong predictor of reading success. In addition, being able to recognize uppercase and lowercase letters are associated with early writing progression.

Play-Doh improves fine motor skills, creativity, and vocabulary. Using Play-Doh supports children who need to hear, see, or touch to learn a concept better. Some children understand and remember through physical movement. This type of learning is called tactile learning.

Tactile learning improves concentration and increases confidence.Tactile learning improves eye-hand coordination and allows children to gain strength in their hands and fingers. Tactile learning supports the skills that children need to write and draw.

Math

Number sense is a fundamental skill needed to progress in kindergarten. Being able to instantly recognize and name numbers is a skill that every student should develop, as this will help them improve their mathematical skills. Number sense practice allows students to talk about math and promotes flexible thinking.

Rhyming helps babies and children learn about words, sounds and oral language. Hearing and using rhyme, rhythm and repetition helps children develop early literacy skills. The repetition of words, ideas and skills is important for early brain development, as it creates secure foundations for early learning.Rhyming is an important first step in learning to read.

Learning about story elements aids children with comprehension and leads to them having a a deeper understanding and appreciation of stories. Understanding story elements gives children a frame of reference to recall and retell what happened in a story. A focus on story elements also helps children learn to write stories of their own.

With my “Doodle Club”, children encounter a reading comprehension skill named sequence. Sequence is the order in which things happen. Children will be able to think and explain event sequences that result in a final art picture. Children will constantly be exposed so sequential words such as first, next, then, and last. Children will also develop their oral language skills.

Construction toys provide understanding of how pieces fit together and encourages comprehension of differing directions, shapes, and spaces. Through construction play, children engage their imagination and creativity while sparking their curiosity. Construction play is a form of hands-on inquiry where children, by nature, discover and explore things for themselves. They gather information, experiment, and question while engaging in constructive play.
